A few years ago, when we had out-of-town company, the weather was simply perfect for a summer evening stroll, and we took a walk across the pasture to explore the creek bed. We dug around in the rocks a bit and wound with up with two fascinating finds to share with my sons- one small lump of Kentucky coal and another quarter sized rock specimen with a shell fossil embedded. From that point forward, my youngest son developed a keen fascination with rock collecting.He still has the original two treasures that sparked his interest along with a number of special finds he has gathered while on vacation, at Mammoth Caves, and even a glow-in-the-dark rock set we found once at book fair.
