Inspiration to Express Yourself Confidently!

Use Your WordsAs a life-long writer, I've certainly read quite a few books on writing related topics, some good, some great, some that I'm indifferent to - most were quite helpful.  Despite being a mom blogger for over eight years, though, I had yet to come across a writing guide that addressed writing from a mom perspective.  Until now.  And it's certainly refreshing!

Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothersintroduces the art of creative nonfiction to women who want to give written expression to their lives. Written by award-winning teacher and writer, Kate Hopper, the book offers to help women find the heart of their writing, learning to use motherhood as a lens through which to write the world, and then to turn their motherhood stories into art.

In retrospect, I wish I'd had this book to turn to a decade ago.  It certain would have eliminated a lot of the guess work along the way!  Glad to have it now as I still found plenty of inspiration in the pages and some clever writing exercises I'll be using this year to help push and enhance my writing skills.

The chapters in Use Your Words are chock full of guidance, development techniques, and entertaining wisdom.  Chapter topics include: the importance of using concrete details, an overview of creative nonfiction as a genre, character development, voice, humor, tense and writing the “hard stuff,” reflection and back-story, structure, revision, and publishing.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a topic that isn't covered and all will lead to inevitable growth in writing experience, deepening your understanding of how to bring your words to the page in the best way imaginable... and then-some!

Use Your Words is an excellent gift for a friend, but you'll certainly want a copy for your rural bookshelf, too.  Delving into the pages of this guide will be a brilliant start to a new year of writing and self-discovery.

Disclosure:  Often we receive advanced reading copies of books to review and from these the best of the best are chosen to share with you.  All thoughts and opinions are that of Rural Mom.
