First, I think it’s important to share a little of my philosophy on how I want to approach this. To take off the inches and to improve my overall wellbeing, I need to change several unhealthy habits that are contributing to a less-than-optimum me. It would be incredibly unrealistic, or perhaps way over-optimistic, to think I can dive full force into eradicating everything at once and waking up to a wholly reformed, brand-spanking new me.
So, I’m looking at a tiered approach that I’ve have since dubbed “Move, Groove, Improve!”
MOVE - Is my mission to move more, sit less, and engage my family in more healthy activities. Many of the extra inches on my waist are highly attributable to my profession (writer) and exhaustion (scheduling too many “busy” tasks and not enough fitness time.)
GROOVE - Enhancing our health and wellness is cause for celebration, so I certainly want friends to “party with” along my journey. That’s why I was so attracted to joining in the Simmworks Weight Loss Challenge. That’s why I’m counting on my Rural Mom friends to join me for conversation and inspiration. And it’s why I’m going to engage my family to join me in fun activities and a healthier lifestyle.
IMPROVE - I’m attempting to reduce a number that I think is totally unhealthy for me, but I’m also a proponent of a holistic approach, considering internal and external health. This is a package deal, if I want to change a part of the package; I have to bring the other pieces (heart, mind, soul, body) in alignment, too.
So, without further adieu, here are my goals for the next two weeks (setting goals bi-monthly will give me the opportunity to review, adjust, and share progress regularly.)
How? - My tool is going to be a kitchen timer, which I will set for 30 minute increments to remind me at get up and move every 30 minutes, for at least 10 minutes, during my work hours.
Move (and Groove) Goal #2- Schedule four (4) healthy family-centric activities each week for at least one (1) hour per activity.
How? – My sons are going to love helping with this one as I’m going to get their input as to what we should list as options! Each week I will schedule time and depending upon the weather, we will participate in an indoor or outdoor “move and groove” time.
Groove Goal #1- Support the other bloggers of the Simmworks Challenge. Share updates and discoveries with Rural Mom readers (and um, keep an eye out for some giveaways, too… grooving is totally about fun!)
How? – Via my social media channels.
Improve Goal #1- Nourish my body with needed supplements.
How? - I’ve been rather inconsistent about taking supplements such as fish oil to keep my cholesterol in check, so I will now be using a pill case to keep track of consumption. Will also be adding more calcium to my diet which is ideal for my age group and is also know to often help aid with weight loss.
Improve Goal #2- Respect and find time/ways to enhance my outer self. Discover new ways to alleviate stress and encourage harmony.
How? It’s no mystery that feeling good about the outer can help the inner, too, so I will be finding time for some of my favorite things I often neglect like a pedicure! Also will try a Yoga session (or two, or three…) And will be focusing on skin care, dry or patchy skin does not make me feel great and I need to be more consistent with my “beauty” routine.
You’ll note that my diet is not a focus this round. I’m not neglecting it and will be mindful of what I eat, but until I tackle some of the larger goals and begin to change destruction habits into constructive ones… all the journals and weight loss plans in the world won’t do much good if I set myself up to only focus on what goes on my plate. Been there, done that, doesn’t work if the lifestyle changes and attitude adjustment are not part of the plan.
So bear with my baby steps! It took me awhile to get to this point, it will take me awhile to get back to where I need to be for an optimum healthy me!
Do you have health goals for this month? Are you taking steps towards better health and wellness?
